Travel Cheap and Have Fun!
Hello friends!
I've been traveling overseas with my husband Jeff for over 18 years. He's retired from the Air Force after 26 years of dedicated service, and I'm semi-retired. I work for the school district in Alamogordo New Mexico as a substitute teacher. I needed a job with flexibility in order to continue with my travel obsession.
Often times, people would ask us how we afford to travel for months at a time, and I'm happy to answer that question. Contrary to popular belief, one doesn't have to win the lottery in order to travel, but doing it smart does involve doing your homework. First of all, we keep track of how much money we spend in each country we visit, and if we visit the same countries, we keep a financial journal, this way we can tell if prices go up. The countries we revisit every year are Korea, Cambodia, Thailand, and Malaysia. Sometimes we do skip Thailand and go to another country in place of it, however, it still remains one of our most frequent travel destinations. Usually, if we spend more money for a hotel or guesthouse, we cut costs by eating in the local markets. Jeff and I have eaten for as little as $1 US for both, but on average we spend $2-$4 US. I can't complain, because that's still cheap. At times, we've eaten a late breakfast, then skipped lunch, and had dinner. We don't necessarily eat three meals daily. We never feel deprived just because we travel on a budget. Doing so is actually quite empowering.
